The competition is named after the Eric Bompard company, which has been its chief sponsor since 2004. Previously, it was co-sponsored by both Eric Bompard and the glassware company Lalique, and was named "Trophée Lalique"[1]. The competition has also been called Trophée de France and the Grand Prix International de Paris.
The competition has been held since 1987. It has usually been held in Paris. The 1991 Trophée Lalique took place in Albertville as a pre-Olympic event, the 1994 competition was held in Lyon, and the 1995 competition took place in Bordeaux.
